More Rainy Day Games-Part 1-Indoor Activities

THESE GAMES IDEAS HELP ENHANCE THE ACADEMIC, SOCIAL, AND PHYSICAL NEEDS OF THE CHILD IN AN LEARNING, STRENGTHEN GROUP COOPERATION SKILLS, AND ENCOURAGE THE MASTERY OF THOSE PHYSICAL EDUCATIONAL SKILLS VITAL FOR CHILDREN.  THIS GAMES CAN BE USED ALL-YEAR ROUND!

  1.  Do This, Do That – A variation of Simon says.  Shake a body movements and say do this and the class does it.  Do that and the class should not do it.
  2. Hide The Object – One child is chosen to be the hunter and hides eyes, while another child hides an object.  The class watches.   After it is hidden, the hunter is ready to find the object.  The closer the child gets to the object the louder the group claps or stamps feet or says “oh, yeh.”   It starts out softly and builds up as the child (hunter) gets closer to the hidden object!
  3. Birds Fly – Leader calls our “ducks fly, cows fly, pigs fly, deer flies, eagles fly, sheep fly, etc. …” When the says the object “flies,”  the class flaps their arms but with animals that do not fly, the class does not flap their arms.
  4. Contest Winners – Small groups with each group getting an ad from a magazine.  The idea is to change the words of one ad and use it in the other ad.  Keep it simple.
  5. Cities and States – Use flash cards with the letters of the alphabet.  The teacher calls out a letter.  The child thinks of a name of a city or state that begins with that letter.  A United States map can be added, since it deals with geography. Small groups could be used also and if a correct answer is given, the group gets a point.  At the end, count the points.  However, I like everyone to win!  Just want see a learning experience.
  6. Calendar Shuffleboard – Need one old calendar and several milk bottle caps.  Tape the calendar to the floor, mark-off a line 2 feet away, and have each child flick the cap onto the calendar.  Total points win!  With four as a team playing you add the 4 scores.
  7. The World Traveler Four children face the wall and a name of a city is taped on the back of the child.  At the sound of go, each child has 3 minutes to try to find out the name of the cities on the backs of the other 3 students.   At the end of the 3 minutes, the player naming the most cities wins.  This can be done also with simple words or animal pictures or animal names.
  8. Vowels In Sports – Use a blackboard with words of sports without the vowels in it.  Have the children fill in the blanks.  Example:  baseball and without the vowels – b_s_b_ll or t_nn-s.
  9. Teapot – The group must guess a “secret word” used in sentences by substituting teapot with the “secret word.”  Questions can be asked by the children and always respond with teapot as the secret word.  Example: I drive to school on the “teapot.”
  10. Yes or No – Five stars are passed out to each child.  This game is done in pairs.  Each child must try to get the other child to say either “yes” or “no” and if this happens a star must be past to that child for making them say “yes’ or “no!    All children must reply and answer all questions.  Questions are rotated by the pair.   Interesting enough is that it takes a long time to try to win those 5 stars.   Even if both parties answer, those stars are past back and forth.  Can add another way by using “maybe” and “sometimes.”

ALTERNATIVE OUTDOORS SPORTS AND GAMES WILL BE PART 11.
